Duct cleaning.

Expert duct cleaning from Mechanical Energy Systems could be the healthiest home improvement you'll ever make.

Have your ducts cleaned with the most advanced cleaning and removal equipment available. Indoor air pollution can cause or aggravate a variety of health problems from headaches and sinus irritation to allergies and asthma. Your heating or cooling system furnace can spread the dust, dirt, pollen, animal dander and other contaminants that collect in your duct work into your home's air.

Faced with the importance of indoor air quality, people are looking at air duct cleaning as a way to solve indoor air quality problems. Even high-quality heating and cooling system components can become contaminated with pollen, dust, mold and other debris. These contaminants may cause allergic reactions in some sensitive people.

Professional and experienced duct cleaning from Mechanical Energy Systems cleans all of the various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems. These components include the supply- and return- air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, cooling coils, condensate drain pans (drip pans), fan motor and fan housing and the air handling unit housing. Mechanical Energy Systems offers comprehensive duct cleaning. It is important to have all of the components cleaned so that your system will not become contaminated by un-cleaned parts.

Breathe easy.

Air pollution is an issue that concerns everyone, but we tend to think it only exists outside.

Up to 90% of our time is spent indoors and much of that time is spent at home. Polluted air in your home can negatively affect your family's health.

EPA studies of human exposure to air pollutants indicate that indoor air levels of many pollutants may be 2-5 times and occasionally more than 100 times, higher than outdoor levels.

These levels of indoor air pollutants are of particular concern because it is estimated that most people spend as much as 90% of their time indoors.

Unlike outdoor air, indoor air is recycled again and again. This causes it to trap and build up pollutants. Common pollutants include dust, mold and spores, pollen, pet dander and smoke.

Knowing what causes poor indoor air quality and how to detect the problem areas is the first step to cleaner air and a healthier living environment. Some illnesses related to poor indoor air quality may include headaches, nose bleed, fatigue, bronchitis, eye irritation, sinus irritation, dizziness, and symptoms of asthma.

Air Quality Facts

  • About 40,000 dust mites, a common cause of household allergies, can be found in only one ounce of dust.
  • The EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health.
  • EPA studies indicate that indoor levels of many pollutants may be 25 times, and occasionally more than 100 times, higher than outdoor levels. In general, indoor air is four to five times more polluted than outdoor air.
  • In the last 30 years, the number of people with asthma has gone up by almost 60%.
  • 87% of American homeowners are not aware that pollution may be worse inside their homes than outdoors.
  • Because they breathe faster than adults, children inhale 50% more air per pound of body weight than adults and are especially sensitive to air quality problems.
  • Over 28 million Americans suffer from hay fever and other allergies.
  • According to a study by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, indoor air contaminants are responsible for half of all illnesses.
  • Many ordinary activities such as cooking, cleaning and redecorating can spread indoor pollutants.
  • Most homes generate about 40 pounds of dust per year for every 1.500 square feet of space.

CO Testing.

What is Carbon Monoxide (CO)?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas often formed in the process of incomplete combustion of organic substances, including fuels. It is dangerous because it interferes with normal oxygen uptake for humans and other living organisms needing oxygen to live

Why should I be concerned about Carbon Monoxide (CO)?

CO is a gas that can build up to dangerous concentrations indoors when fuel- burning devices are not properly vented, operated, or maintained. Because it has no odor, color or taste, CO cannot be detected by our senses. It is estimated that unintentional CO exposure accounts for an estimated 500 deaths in the United States each year. Poisoning contributes annually to more than 2,000 deaths in the United States.1 In addition, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that 8,000 to 15,000 people each year are examined or treated in hospitals for non-fire related CO poisoning. Breathed over long periods of time, low concentrations of CO may also contribute to other illness. Fortunately, simple measures can be taken to prevent CO problems. One such action is the installation of a CO alarm to detect potentially deadly conditions.

How can I protect myself and my family from CO poisoning?

Simple measures can be taken to prevent CO problems. Make sure that all your fuel burning appliances and heating devices are properly vented and maintained. Know the symptoms of CO poisoning. Finally, do detect potentially deadly conditions, install and maintain CO alarms in your home in accordance with Minnesota's CO alarm law.

1. Properly vent and maintain fuel-burning appliances.

Homes with fuel-burning appliances such as gas furnaces, water heaters, ovens, and fireplaces or homes with attached garage are more likely to have CO problems than those homes not using these appliances. You should have your fuel-burning appliances checked by a qualified heating contractor every year to look for possible problems. The following signs may indicate a CO problem:

  • Streaks of soot around fuel-burning appliances;
  • Absence of an upward draft in your chimney;
  • Excess moisture found on windows, walls, or other cold surfaces;
  • Excessive rusting on flue pipes, other pipe connections, or appliance jacks;
  • Orange or yellow flames (should be blue) in your combustion appliances;
  • Smoky smells-don't assume your fire alarm works;
  • Fallen soot in the fireplace;
  • Small amount of water leaking from the base of the chimney vent, or flue pipe;
  • Damaged or discolored bricks at the top of your chimney; and
  • Rust on the portion of the vent pipe visible from the outside.
  • Never use a barbeque grill or portable gas generator indoors. Never heat your home using an oven designed for cooking.

2. Know the symptoms of CO poisoning.

The health effects of breathing in CO depend on the concentration of CO in the air, the duration of exposure, and the health status of the exposed person. For most people, the first signs of exposure to low concentrations of CO include mild headache and breathlessness with moderate exercise. People with heart disease are more likely to be affected by CO, even at low concentrations. Continued exposure can lead to flu-like symptoms including more severe headaches, dizziness, tiredness, and nausea that may progress to confusion, irritability, and impaired judgment, memory and coordination. CO is called the "silent killer" because if the early signs are ignored, a person may lose consciousness and be unable to escape to safety. Under certain conditions, lethal concentrations of CO have occurred within 10 minutes in the confines of a closed garage with a car engine running inside or when a portable generator is used in or near a house.

3. Install and maintain CO alarms in your home.

As of August 1, 2008, Minnesota State Law requires that single family homes have at least one operational CO alarm within 10 feet of every room legally used for sleeping (see Minnesota Statute, 299F.50). Multi-family or apartment homes must have alarms starting August 1, 2009. All CO alarms should be certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory to conform to the latest Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Standards. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for placement of your CO alarm and also note the suggested replacement date. For additional information on CO alarms, call 651-201-7200 or visit HYPERLINK "mailto:www.fire.state.mn.us" www.fire.state.mn.us

Radiant Heat.

Indoor air pollution is comprised of primarily three sources.

Space

Every square foot of your home can be fully utilized. Radiant floor heating allows you to design your home to suit you rather than your heating engineer.

Hygiene

Healthy indoor environment. There will be less dust and the hygienic environment will be improved, helping to reduce house dust mites.

Aesthetics

Radiant floor heating permits freedom for interior design. You can furnish as you like, no radiators to determine how the furniture should be placed.

Labor saving

Cleaning of the floors is easier and wet floors dry very quickly.

Comfort

Radiant heat will provide the highest comfort levels. Radiant Underfloor Heating is considered by some to be a luxury; the actual cost, however, is very competitive.

Silence

Compared to radiator systems, there is no noise.

Cost effective

Saves energy and running costs. Energy saving can be achieved with radiant underfloor heating.

Ease of control

Small temperature difference between the floors means the system is practically self regulating.

Adaptable

The installation is fast and simple.

Low-temperature system

It is possible to use different heat sources – the water in the pipes can be heated by using oil burners, gas burners, solar energy, electricity etc.

Dual Fuel.

A dual fuel heating system combines two heating sources to best fit your home and tailor your energy needs.

In a dual fuel heating system, an electric heat source, such as a boiler, plenum heater heat pump (air source or geothermal) is used in conjunction with fuel oil, propane, natural gas or wood heat as the back-up heating system.

Dual Fuel is a controlled electric heating program, which helps save money and conserve energy. When demand for electricity is high the electric heat source is shut off, or controlled (for a certain number of hours per heating season) with a maximum continuous control time of hours during a day. During control periods, your home's back-up system provides the heat you need.

Maintenance.

Indoor air pollution is comprised of primarily three sources.

Airborne Particles: Even though they’re not usually visible with the naked eye, airborne contaminants like dust, pollen, dirt, pet dander, insulation and carpet fibers, are usually the largest of the pollutants. These larger airborne particles can cause hay fever and aggravate many different symptoms of asthma.

Biological Contaminants: These contaminants typically thrive in warm humid environments. Very small, they can get past the bodies natural filtration systems and get into the lungs. Found in places like bedding, basements and bathrooms, biological contaminants include mold spores, dust mites, viruses, fungi, bacteria, yeasts and algae.

Odors and Gases: These contaminants can be caused by many sources. Fireplaces, gas ovens, space heaters, water heaters, carpets, garages, pets, cleaning products, furniture, paint, perfumes, pesticides and tobacco smoke are all potential sources. More than a nuisance, some of these contaminants can be dangerous or even deadly. One of the more dangerous of these contaminants is carbon monoxide which can be caused by back drafting heating appliances, poorly maintained fossil fuel heating systems, faulty chimneys, gas cooking appliances, cigarette smoking and idling cars in an attached garage.
